Interview (Polish) - Andrzej Chendyński - A Little Poland in India, The Valivade Chapter
English Translation: ANDRZEJ CHENDYŃSKI - "India and Valivade are a very interesting part of the story as they were THE first awareness of my life.
There was no other camp like Valivade. Talking about its organization I have to say that it was a fantastically organized Polish camp.

During WW2 as per records there were 6 Polish Camps in different cities of undivided India. Bandra-Mumbai, Quetta now Pakistan, Jamnagar of Maharaja, Walevade near Kolhapur, Arogyashala in Panchgani, Paragman Shivir now in Karachi Pakistan. Jamnagar & Walevade were the longest running camps 5-6 years.. All this was done when India her self under British Colonial Rule British didn't cooperate much but Indians helped with their own Efforts, Good Values & Trust!

Its very unfortunate that our education system doesn't value such chapters of our greatest history to be taught to children. Indeed, such a beautiful and emotional documentary it is. Unfortunately some religions think they are superior and cause harm to fellow humans. Great gesture from Mother Bharat. Jai Hind

Had I been able to meet the Good Maharaja when he still lived, I'd kiss his feet in gratitude for what he did for my people. He had done the most compassionate and generous thing I can imagine - rescued and provided for the homeless, destitute and orphaned innocents. There are no words to express my love and respect for him. His example and of others who came to help to my countrymen once, inspired me to bring help, although my means are much more limited than those of the Maharaja, to reach out to some of the people who had fled Ukraine in 2022 after Russia's full scale invasion began. We, Poles, have a great debt of gratitude for the help that was given to our civilians before, and I believe the best way to try to pay it back, is to help those who had found themselves in a similar situation.

The first known Baghdadi Jewish immigrant to India, Joseph Semah, arrived in the port city of Surat in 1730. He and other early immigrants established a synagogue and cemetery in Surat, though most of the city's Jewish community eventually moved to Bombay (Mumbai), where they established a new synagogue and cemetery.

It's strange thing to mention but here in UK there are so many Indo-Polish couples, including myself. In my friend circle there are atleast 8-9 Indo-Polish couples. Main reason is that both Indian and Polish people are very hard working, have good family values and feel a bit outsider in UK, like new kids in the class..so they get along well.
